Q: Why do we need a "new translation" of the Missal?
K.T.- Illinois
A: Properly speaking, this is not a new translation of the Missal.  It is the first translation of the third typical edition of the Roman Missal, a "new" edition of the Missal that was promulgated by Pope John Paul II.  This edition of the missal added new texts including those for recently-named saints, masses for special occasions and the like. In deciding how to translate these new texts, revised guidelines were issued in order to bring up to date proper methods for providing for vernacular usage. These guidelines, entitled "Liturgiam Authenticam," form the fifth instruction from the Holy See's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments "for the right implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council."
